I recently applied the art of paper-cutting to create some unique, beautiful images of Buddha and Kuan Yin (who is the Buddhist Goddess of the Great Compassion) in paper form. After finishing this project, I was thinking of making an image of Jesus Christ in paper form, too.
Thanks to my good neighbor, Mr. Henry Hong, for giving me a Christian book, “Pocket Guide to the Bible,” by Jason Boyett. The cover of this precious book has an inspirational image of Jesus Christ, which is similar to the thirteenth-century mosaic of Christ from Hagia Sophia showing Christ on a somewhat more human level, in contrast to the stern, overpowering image of the Christ Pantokrator . So, I created the following unique image of Jesus Christ in paper form based on this inspirational image of Christ. (09/08/2012)
Mr. Henry Hong, who is a devout Christian, told me the following:
“Christians hold Jesus to be the Son of God who will bring salvation and eternal life to those who repent their sins and believe in Him. Christians believe that by following Jesus’s teachings and by repenting their own sins, they will be granted salvation, and they too will enjoy eternal life with God after the end of their earthly lives.”
The following image is Mr. Hong in Korean traditional wear and a scene of “Snow in the Home Town” on Christmas Eve, 2013, in his church.
The following image is Mr Hong with the kids in his church on 12/23/2018. He was the most loved Santa in his church during the Christmas holiday. (12/28/2018)
Mr. Henry Hong has been my good neighbor and good friend in this senior apartment complex in City of Rancho Cucamonga since November of 2010. He moved out this month, November of 2015, for the reason that was beyond his control. Mr. Hong is a devout Christian. He always attends the “Early Morning Prayer” and does volunteer work in his church. I really appreciate Mr. Hong’s inspiration and friendship, and I wish him the very best. The following two images of Mr. Hong and me were taken in this senior apartment compelx. (11/30/2015)
On February 26, 2016, while having lunch with Mr. Henry Hong to celebrate his upcoming birthday, he gave me some booklets with the same title of “The Purpose of Life – Are you heading toward the true purpose of life?” printed in English and in the simplified Chinese Characters. Those fine booklets, which were published by his church, ALL NATIONS CHURCH, www.anconnuri.com, were written by Im, Chung Soon and translated by Rev. Daniel S. Kim. The booklets were made to introduce the gospel to non-Christians by using the modern versions of the Bible. Mr. Hong said that I may input the booklet to my website. So, I am delighted and feel honored to share with you the following “Words of Wisdom” that are parts of the booklet in English. (02/29/2016)
Congratulations on giving your life over to Christ and taking Him as the Lord of your life. The following prayer can be a guide for you if you want to start a new life as a Christian:
“Dear Lord, I believe that you died on the cross for my sins and rose again to give eternal life to me. I confess that I am a sinner and accept you as my Lord and Savior. I will live as a child of God and seek the guidance of Jesus. I pray in His name, Amen.”
Now that you are a child of God and have received an eternal life, God naturally wants you to grow in the Spirit. Through a holy and clean life, you can lead a life that is true to your purpose.
Exercising the following things is important to your growth.
1. Begin by attending sevices regularly at church, as this will teach you more about Jesus Christ and inform you better of the word of God. Give glory to God thorugh worship services that please Him, and learn to have a deep relationship with Him as you desire His grace.
2. Begin by reading the Bible “John” regularly with prayer, so that you can understand the abundance of the Love of God and have spiritual conversation with Him.
3. Have a fellowship with other Christians who can help you grow and find confidence within the Christian community.
4. Through the Bible studies and training, build character to be more like Jesus, and serve your neighbors with love for ministry.
5. Witness to others about Jesus and share the joy and blessing you find in knowing Jesus Christ with others. This is the greatest blessing and joy, and allows us to complete our mission.
The source of my following painting of Jesus Christ is the “Christ icon,” at the Monastery of Saint Catherine, at Mount Sinai (Egypt), 6th-8th centureis. It is a treasury of Byzantine panel paintings, known as icons (images). His right hand is lifted in a gesture of teaching and his left holds the customary Gospel book, adorned with massive, jeweled gold covers and clasps. This may be the earliest icon of Christ to come down to us. (Source: “ART: A History of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture,” Fourth Edition, by Frederick Hartt.) (09/28/2013)
The following inspirational poems were taken from “The Book of Psalms.”
— He will cover you with his feathers and under his wings you will find refuge.
— The Lord watches over you. The Lord is your shade at your right hand. The Lord will keep you from all harm. He will watch over your life.
— God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
— My soul finds rest in God alone…
— The Lord is near to all who call on Him…
— Whom have I in heaven but Thee? And besides Thee, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart my fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
— O Lord, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me! My only hope is in your love and faithfulness.
— Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.
— If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
— My soul clings to Thee; Thy right hand upholds me.
— You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me wth songs of deliverance.
— Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.
— Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning.
— Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in you my soul takes refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of thy wings.
— “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.”
— Let me dewell in Thy tent forever; let me take refuge in the shadow of Thy wings.
