The richly varied traditions of Buddhism have given us one of the most visually stunning, spiritually resonant cultural legacies of any great faith — a heritage of sacred art and architecture built up over two and a half millennia by both wealthy patrons and humble devotees. Buddhism evolved from the Hindu faith in the late sixth and early fifth centuries BC, and extended to Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Indonesia, then on to China, Korea and Japan. The immense and awe-inspiring gifts of creation have fed the minds and souls of the Asian people, and this is reflected in the way their sacred lands are marked. As you view my paintings of the sacred images, may you find the delight at the wonders and variety of creation, which are alive with essential qualities of wisdom and compassion, beauty and mystery.
