“Pinkie,” Print, 8″x11″, $5.75 Ea

Ever since painting began, the work of great Master has been imitated by other painters. Here is my Chinese brush painting of “Pinkie,” which is one of the best-loved paintings. The original “Sarah Barrett Moulton: Pinkie,” oil on canvas, was created by the British artist Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) in 1794. Lawrence, a rising young star in British portraiture, was asked by Pinkie’s grandmother to paint a full-length portrait of Pinkie in “an careless attitude.” So, Lawrence began the painting of Pinkie as a routine commission protrait, involving a sitter of no particular importance, with whom he had no personal connection. “Pinkie, the young Miss Moulton’s nickname, is likely referred to this little girl’s size, her rosy cheeks and her favorite color of pink. The low horizon line gives the impression that Pinkie is standing calmly and firmly on the crest of a hill, despite of a turbulent sky. The two masterpieces, Pinkie and The Blue Boy, have resided together in the main gallery of the Huntington Art Gallery, San Marino, California.
