Ever since painting began, the work of great masters has been imitated and copied by other painters. Copying the work of the masters does not merely help encourage a good eye, natrual talent, and the development of technical expertise, it is also a great experience to end up with a completed version of a painting, which can be compared with the work of a master. Here is my Chinese brush painting of the “Portrait of Susanna Lunden.” The original “Portrait of Susanna Lunden,” oil on panel, was created by the Dutch artist Rubens (1577-1640). This work is characteristic of his rich style. Rubens used a limited color range, but, by combining opaque, light tones and dark, translucent shadows he achieved a wide spectrum of color. Susanna Lunden was Rubens’ sister-in-law.
