In Thailand, Buddhism is the official religion and it dominates national life. The king still has the right to appoint the most senior monk in the land. According to the tradition of Thailand, a king must have been ordained as monk and as a member of Thai Sangha before serving his nation and his people. Since thirteen century the Thai Buddha images show majestic and regal nobility. Here is an image of a Thai Buddha statue. The Buddha’s long ear lobes and a topknot on his head symbolize both wisdom and light. His hand gesture – touching the earth – signifies overcoming obstacles and as a witness to his worthiness for Buddhahood. Serenity and power are combined in the classical Thai image of the Buddha calling the earth to witness his enlightenment.
